THOMAS TWP. – Swan Valley softball coach Tom Kennelly won his 1,000th game on April 16. He amassed his victories over 35 years at Swan Valley.

Coach Kennelly gives credit to those that helped him reach that milestone saying that it took “good athletes and good assistants” to get there. His current assistant coaches have been with him for over 25 years.

Over the years he said that building relationships keeps him going and is rewarding. Those relationships can extend generations. Kennelly coached the mothers of three girls on his current team.

Coach Kennelly has had success over the years, making it to the state tournament eight times, finishing second four times and winning the state championship in 1986.

He said that over the years the “bat and ball have changed, but the players haven’t.” The girls he’s coached have been goal-oriented, very team-focused, hard-working students as well as athletes.

He teaches his girls to compete and excel. “With all the work they put in, why work hard to be second best,” Coach Kennelly said.

He enjoys seeing his teams play and get better, and that it’s an “honor to put on the purple.”
