Saginaw Twp. Art In Public Places welcomes Bay City artist

SAGINAW TWP. – The Saginaw Charter Township Art In Public Places presents Nancy Schlapman, of Bay City, for the month of December.

In her artist’s statement, Schlapman said, “Antique wooden furniture has always been a passion of mine. Old, lovely wood, that was sometimes salvageable and sometimes not. I would collect various pieces to admire, refinish, and refurbish. I was especially drawn to antique chairs and one day I said to my 9-year-old granddaughter, ‘what does the arm of that broken chair look like to you?’ She said, ‘An elbow’ and repurposed wooden sculptures were born. As one can see from the wooden sculptures, the creations are made from discarded broken chairs, wooden bowls, bread boards, wooden spoons and forks and many other wooden odds and ends.”

She added, “These wooden creations have been my main focus for the past year, but I have always considered myself an avocational artist. I took several art courses in college along with getting my bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in nursing. After which I practiced and taught nursing for my whole career. Over the years, I have been in various art shows and fairs in Wisconsin and Michigan and have won several awards. One of my acrylic paintings was purchased by a Wisconsin senator and it still hangs in the Washington D. C. capitol building.”

Schlapman continued, “Now retired, I can focus more on my artistic endeavors. I work in pen and ink, colored pencils, oil, watercolors, fabric and acrylics as well as making the wooden creations. I like to mix techniques and experiment with different media. This art display has given me a chance to showcase a variety of my art pieces. I am grateful to the Saginaw Township Art in Public Places Committee for this opportunity and hope you enjoy my work.”

Schlapman’s art exhibit will be shown at the Saginaw Charter Township Hall, 4980 Shattuck Road, Saginaw, during business hours Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., through Dec. 31, 2014.

The township offices will be closed Dec. 24 - 26.
