Nouvel to honor ’90 boys basketball state champion team at Dec. 22 game

SAGINAW TWP. – Nouvel Catholic Central announced that on Monday, Dec. 22, between the junior varsity and varsity boys basketball games, the school will honor the 1990 Class C state championship team.

Members of the team will be presented to the crowd between games to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the team’s state title.

The Nouvel boys basketball program is no stranger to the championship arena, earning state titles in 1987, 1988, 1990 and 1991, and finishing as state runners-up in 1986 and 2007.

Nouvel first opened its doors in the fall of 1984.

Shiawassee Refuge’s 24th annual non-ambulatory deer hunt a success

Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge has implemented a program for non-ambulatory deer hunters since 1991. In fact, it is one of the first such programs initiated in the Refuge System. This program gives many people an opportunity to enjoy the experience of hunting that otherwise would be unable to. This year’s hunt was conducted Nov. 15 – 18, with 32 hunters participating. Eleven participants were able to take a deer, including two 11-point, one nine-point, and three eight-point bucks.

This program would not be possible without the support of many partners, including the National Wild Turkey Federation’s (NWTF) Wheelin’ Sportsmen program and the Michigan state NWTF chapter. Also instrumental were local NWTF chapters, including the Pontiac Longspurs, Shiawassee River Strutters, and the Midland, chapter.

Contributions were also provided by private enterprises, including Coca Cola, Ameristep, and Jay’s Sporting Goods. These funds are used to purchase radios, heaters, chairs, blinds, and other equipment and supplies. Importantly, these funds also provide a hot lunch for every hunter that participates, which is a real necessity for a late autumn day in the field.

Each year 30 to 40 volunteers raise funds, coordinate the event, install and remove blinds, and provide assistance to the hunters through the day, including tracking and field dressing deer.
