Nouvel girls headed to state quarterfinals

The Nouvel Catholic Central girls basketball team advanced to the state quarterfinals after winning the regional championship. They beat Ithaca 69-66 in the opening round and Unionville- Sebewaing in the final, 60-38.

In the first regional game against Ithaca, the Panthers held the Yellowjackets to only four points in the first quarter while scoring 17.

Ithaca came back in the second quarter with 20 and then put up 17 in the third to outscore Nouvel 37-22 and take the 41-39 lead into the fourth.

The Panthers scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to take a 44-41 lead but then the Yellowjackets scored 10 unanswered points to go up by seven, 51-44.

Nouvel went on an eight point run to go up 52-51. The two teams then traded the lead back and forth over the final three minutes of regulation for a 59-59 tie, sending the game to overtime.

The Panthers outscored the Yellowjackets 10-7 in overtime to take the 69-66 win.

Nouvel coach Sean Williams said that he felt pretty good how his team played, taking good shots and playing good defense.

Laurel Jacqmain scored 29 points for the Panthers. Nicole Buckingham added 15 and Alex Joynt had 12.

In the regional final against Unionville-Sebewaing, Nouvel took the 60-38 win. The Panthers had a two point lead, 10-8, at the end first quarter, but then got the offense rolling with 23 points in the second while only allowing 9 for the 33-17 lead.

Nouvel outscored USA 27-21 in the second half to take the 60-38 win.

Jacqmain again led the team with 19 points and Buckingham scored 12 while Emily Long had nine.
