THOMAS TWP. – Swan Valley High School (SVHS) is hosting author Wade Rouse for a book signing and presentation for his piece, The Charm Bracelet.

The Charm Bracelet is about women using charms as a way to memorialize special moments in their lives, and to reconnect with the members of their family through three generations. The book was written in honor of Rouse’s grandmother, who was the inspiration for the story.

“It was through the charms on my grandmothers’ bracelets that I got to know my grandmothers, not only as my grandmas but as incredible women who lived extraordinary lives filled with beauty, hope and tragedy,” said Rouse.

Under the guidance of Kay Rejrowski, library media specialist at SVHS, students are creating their own symbols to express themselves, tell their story, or to connect with others, much like Rouse’s characters do in The Charm Bracelet.

“In literature – and art – some of the best connectors are symbols, things to which we can all relate,” Rouse said. There is a wide variety of symbols that the students can chose to create, whatever best expresses their own stories and passions.

As a member of the Great Michigan Read, Swan Valley’s Rejkowski is a strong supporter of hosting authors like Rouse at the high school.

Rouse is excited to visit Swan Valley. “The Library of Michigan raved about the school (SVHS), its students, faculty and Kay Wejrowski,” he said.

Sponsors for the event include: Library of Michigan, Michigan Department of Education, Michigan Humanities Council, the Library of Michigan Foundation, Meijer, The Michigan Center for the Book, City Pulse, Dome, Queue Advertising, and Gennara Photography.
