SAGINAW TWP. – White Pine Middle School will be the site of the Family Fun/Walk AND Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Fair on Saturday, May 20. The event is hosted by a student group called Student/Staff Wellness Action Team (SWAT).

It all started when a few White Pine students found out some of their fellow students could not concentrate on their work.

“The concerned students created and administered a survey in order to determine what was causing this issue. The survey results revealed many students were not regularly eating breakfast,” said Zack Mehalski, a teacher at White Pine.

The school used the survey to change the breakfast policy at the cafeteria. Now the cafeteria opens early for breakfast and remains open for students who come with a breakfast pass. Those students who arrive later can receive a breakfast pass that excuses the tardy..

SWAT has sponsored a number of events at White Pine, including: Staff wellness contests, Ga-Ga Ball instruction, a plan for a walk path, and the second annual one mile and 5K run/ walks.

Sheri McCauley, a teacher and one of the organizers at White Pine, said, “The event was set up so we could raise money for our walk/run path. The path will be used for staff and faculty to walk on their lunch or on their breaks. The event is really meant to promote wellness overall.”

The Family Fun/Walk will start at 9 a.m. with the youth one-mile and the 5K will start at 9:20 a.m. in the North Lot at White Pine. The STEM Fair will take place from 10 a.m. - noon. There is a fee for the run/walk. The STEM Fair is free to the public. The staff and faculty insists that all kids have an adult with them when they participate in the STEM Fair.

Terrie Robbie, MYP/STEM coordinator, said, “Students will be able to make slime, film canister rockets, and launch water rockets. M-Dot will be here with a driving simulator. Chippewa Nature Center, Engineering for Kids, Dow Chemical, Mathnasium, American Chemical Society, Mosquito Control and the Delta STEM Bus will all be here.”

Local sponsors for the event include: Graff Chevrolet, STEA, Independent Bank, Wildfire Credit Union, Tracy Collier, Team One Credit Union, Junior League of the Great Lakes Bay Region, Sandlot Sports, Meijer, Covenant, United Financial Credit Union, Fordney Club, and the Saginaw Athletic Club. Golden Shoe Sponsors include: Tim Hortons, McDonalds, Big Apple Bagel, and Kroger.
