Heritage, Nouvel tennis girls compete at regionals

Photo by Lamont Lenar The Heritage and Nouvel Catholic Central girls’ tennis teams competed in their regional tournaments at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. The Hawks placed third in Division 1 on Thursday, May 18, and the Panthers finished fifth in Division 4 on Friday, May 19.

Heritage earned wins from all four of its singles players and from all four doubles teams, with each winning their opening games before getting knocked out.

Heritage coach Gary Senkowski said this is the best the team has performed in several years, with the team amassing 17 points, just one point shy of qualifying for the state tournament.

Sabrina Laynes, the second seeded player, after a first round bye, won her match 6-4, 6-0 and advanced to the semifinal round. Sophia Manlapit won her opening match 6-3, 6-2 after a bye, Jessica Fattal got a 6-1, 6-0 victory and Ines Garcia Rosado won her first round match 7-6, 6-3.

Photo by Lamont Lenar In doubles, the team of Salina Iqbal and Angie Xu won its first match 6-1, 6-0. Sabrina Iqbal and Allison Hartwick won 6-2, 6-0. Ariana Shokoohi and Emilia Shokoohi took their opening match 6-0, 6-0 with Meghana Mulpuri and Lydia Ward getting a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Nouvel placed fifth in the Division 4 with two of its singles players and two of its doubles teams advancing to the semifinal rounds of each of their brackets. Allyson Sova won her first match 6-2, 6-1, and Mary Kolleth get the three set victory 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in singles.

In doubles, the teams of Christina Buko and Marcella Fabiano got the 6-1, 7-5 first round win, and Grace Dobis with Juliette Shaheen won their first game 6-0, 6-2.

Photo by Lamont Lenar Nouvel coach Meghan Lawler said she was impressed with how the team improved throughout the season, stating they all should be very proud of how well they played at regionals this year.
