Heritage track hosts Last Chance invite

Photo by Lamont Lenar Heritage held its Last Chance Invitational track meet on Wednesday, May 17, with seven schools participating. The Heritage girls’ team took first, with the boys team placing third. The Swan Valley boys placed fifth and the girls’ team finished sixth.

Heritage coach Gary Loubert said the season has been a bit tough with some injuries, but stated that the team was hanging in there, with the highlight of winning the Hemlock Invitational this season.

Coach Lubert said the girls are on a roll, having broken five school records so far this season and won two invitational meets at Frankenmuth and Hemlock. New records this season include: Bri Walker in the 400 meter dash, Rachel Kempf in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, Sy’Marianna McAfee, Courtney Houston, Bre’nea Benton, Bri Walker in the 400 meter relay, and Rachel Kempf, Lauren Wellman, Lynsey Amthor, Madi Brooks in the 3200 meter relay.

Photo by Lamont Lenar The Hawks have seven that have qualified for the state meet: Bre’nea Benton in the 100 meter dash, Courtney Houston in the 100 meter hurdles, Bri Walker in the 400 meter dash and the long jump, Taireis Richardson in the shot put, Sy’Marianna McAfee, Courtney Houston, Bre’nea Benton, Bri Walker in the 400 meter relay, and Rachel Kempf, Lauren Wellman, Lynsey Amthor, Madi Brooks in the 3200 meter relay.

Swan Valley boys’ coach David Dawson said his team has worked hard this season with some conference wins and placing in the top half of most of its invitational meets.

Coach Dawson noted highlights for the season, including finishing third at the St. Louis Relays, and wins in the Hemlock Classic from Ethan Champney in the 400 meter dash and the 3200 relay team of Wendler, Anderson, Strecker, Piwowarski. Champney also qualified for the state meet on June 3 in the 400 meter dash.

Photo by Lamont Lenar Swan Valley girls’ coach Mario Guarrero said his team has worked extremely hard this year, stating, “A lot of the girls have hit some amazing times and personal records this year.”

With a small team this season, with each girl in three or four events each meet, coach Guarrero said, “We just missed out on a few qualifying for the state meet.”
