Saginaw Township approves fireworks display for July 4

By Josh Haley

The Saginaw County Country Club’s July 4 fireworks display has the green light from the Saginaw Charter Township Board. Wolverine Fireworks Display, Inc. in Kawkawlin received the permit to conduct the display at the SCCC on June 12 at the regular board meeting. The cost of the display is $4,000. Wolverine Fireworks Display was recommended by Township Manager, Rob Grosse.

Township Supervisor, Tim Braun took the time to mention how much the SCCC Fireworks Display meant to his family over the years. The display is certainly something to be proud of in Saginaw Township.

The township purchased a brand new Brutus Polaris for a total amount of 23,348.61. Weiss Equipment in Frankenmuth won the bid for the purchase. The Brutus will be used for the Saginaw Township Soccer Complex and the Township Parks System. Director of Public Services, Herb “Sonny” Grunwell’s memo to the board emphasized the rigid construction and versatility of the Polaris product line as the reason for the purchase.

“We have a 2003 vehicle. The Soccer Complex used it for a long time,” said Matt Rappley, assistant director of Public Services, advocating for the new purchase. Rappley represented the DPS at the board meeting on Monday.

The new Brutus has a number of useful features including a 24-horsepower diesel engine, a cargo box payload capacity of 1,250 lbs., and the ability to tow up to 2,000 lbs. among other items.

The board also approved a waiver for the right of first refusal on seven parcels in the township that foreclosed to the Saginaw County Treasurer in March. The township has the right to purchase the parcels because they are located in the township.

Other issues covered by the board included a renewal of the franchise agreement with Charter Communications; and the board signed off on the Saginaw County Road Commission’s installation of mast arm signals at the corner of Tittabawassee Road and Towne Center Road for a total amount of $62,500.
