Pulse3 Foundation’s Annual Run For Your Heart Races set for Sept. 9

Close to 2,000 racers and volunteers are expected for the 10th Annual Pulse3 Foundation Run for Your Heart Community Races on Saturday, Sept. 9 to fight heart disease in the Great Lakes Bay Region. Registration is available online at www.runforyourheart.org.

Activities kick off at 7:45 a.m. with the “Sam Merrill Run. Honor. Remember. Ceremony” highlighting the stories of four local families - two celebrating miraculous stories of survival and two honoring the memory of a loved one lost to heart disease. The honorees are:

• Survivor Larry Frendscho, who participated in his first 5K (Run for Your Heart) when he was 52 weeks post-heart transplant.

• Survivor Stan Krajkowski, who was saved by his teenage daughters and wife when he suffered a cardiac arrest at home.

• In memory of Pete Haertel, a 52-year-old who died unexpectedly in May 2017.

• In memory of Tim “Coach Hibb” Hibbard, a beloved high school coach who died in March 2016 while shoveling snow.

The event features a USA Track and Field-certified half marathon, 10K run, 5K run/walk, free kids races (quarter and half mile distances) and an all new Kids Zone open from 8 – 11 a.m. All races begin/end at the Michigan CardioVascular Institute, 1015 S. Washington Ave., Saginaw.

With participation growing each year, the courses take racers through Hoyt Park, the Children’s Zoo at Celebration Square, Ojibway Island and the Riverwalk. The half marathon also includes the Old Town business district, Court Street and Wickes Park. Entertainment and cheering sections are stationed throughout. All racers receive a performance shirt and a finisher medal.

Proceeds from the event remain local and are used to fight heart disease through Pulse3’s programming initiatives designed to: Help people live healthier and more active lifestyles; teach the signs and symptoms of a heart attack; place automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in public locations; train people for free in CPR and AED use; and gather healthcare professionals to discuss ways to improve cardiac care

Registration was available online at www.runforyourheart.org through Wednesday, Sept. 6. Late registration and packet pick up is available at MCVI from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8, and beginning at 6:30 a.m. on race day.
