Great Lakes Loons close out season against Captains

Photo by Lamont Lenar The Great Lakes Loons finished their season on Monday, Sept. 4 at home against the Lake County Captains. The Loons took the first two games of their final series from the Captains to move their season record to .500 at 69-69

A win in the season finale would give the Loons a winning record for the season, but the Loons lost to the Captains, 10-8.

The Loons went 36-33 in the first half of the season, but then went 33-37 in the second half to finish at 69-70. They finished out of the playoffs, after winning the Midwest League championship last year.

Lake County scored the first run of the game, with one run in the top of the fourth, then added three more in the top of the fifth for the 4-0 lead.

The Loons came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, to pull within one, 4-3. Cody Thomas led off the inning for the Loons with a single. Nick Yarnall then reached base and moved on to second on a throwing error, putting runners on second and third. Steve Berman got the RBI with a sacrifice fly, sending Thomas home.

Photo by Lamont Lenar Moises Perez then doubled, scoring Yarnall, to pull within two 4-2. Saige Jenco followed with another double, sending Perez home, to make it 4-3.

The Captains scored two more in the sixth, but the Loons surged back with four of their own, in the bottom of the inning, to take the lead, 7-6.

Cristian Santana started off the inning drawing a walk for the Loons. Jeren Kendall then doubled, putting runners on second and third. Santana scored on a sacrifice grounder by Starling Heredia, Thomas came back around in the order for a double, sending Kendall home..

The Captains tied the game up at 7-7 in the seventh, then took the lead with another run in the eight to make it 8-7. Lake County scored two more in the top of the ninth for the 10-7 advantage.

The Loons got one more run in the bottom of the ninth. Gavin Lux drew a walk to open the inning, and then scored on a triple from Kendall for the 10-8 final.
