SAGINAW TWP. – The students of Heritage High School ran through the halls for a good cause on Friday, Dec. 8. Classes were pitted against each other in the school’s 13th “season” of the Amazing Race, and annual fundraiser event to help local families.

“Whether it’s food, clothing or gifts, we help them with whatever they need during the holiday season,” said Pam Moretuzzo, a teacher who is one of the coordinators of the fundraiser along with fellow teacher Melissa Fila.

Runners from each first hour class were given 20 minutes to run as many envelopes filled with donations to the library where volunteers collected and counted them. Students were encouraged to participate dressed in costumes themed after their classes. A live broadcast from the library kept classes updated on the race.

This year, Emily Morse’s class won first place, donating a total of $1603.20, earning the students a catered lunch and movie. Mike Wierda’s and Christine Fry’s classes won second and third place respectively and will receive a breakfast of cinnamon rolls, sandwiches and fruit. In all the previous years, $101,886.28 has been raised in total. This year, the students added another $9600 to that figure.

“[The students] enjoy the opportunity to give back to the community,” said Moretuzzo.
