Thomas Township purchases Shields Men’s Club property

By Cameron Kerkau

The Thomas Township Board of Trustees approved the purchase of 7.76 acres of land from the Shields Men’s Club in the amount of $76,500 at its latest meeting on Monday, March 5. This land, located at 605 South Miller Road, has historically been the site of Shields Summer Festival.

While the Shields Summer Festival will not be taking place this year, the Shields Lions Club Parade will still be occurring on June 7, said Supervisor Bob Wiese. The township plans to use this land to expand Roberts Park.

The board approved of a services agreement with AKT Peerless to perform an environmental assessment of the property and awarded the demolition of various small structures on the property to Tri-Valley Construction in an amount not to exceed $16,480.

Also at the meeting, the board awarded a contract to replace the service window of the Public Safety Building with Level 5 Bulletproof Glass to Total Security Solutions in the amount of $8,214. For the fire department, the board purchased 10 Zoll Plus Automatic External Defibrillators from BioMedical Solutions Inc. in the amount of $10,000.

A three-year bid in the total of $10,032 was awarded to Billy’s Contracting for township dumpster services and a $6,600 bid was awarded to Bill’s Custom Fab for the construction of a welcome sign on the Thomas Trail.

The board also approved a four-year labor agreement with local members of the Service Employees International Union, resulting in a three and half percent increase to clerical and laborer wages in the first year followed by a three percent increase in the three following years.
