Nouvel rallies to top VL in district opener

Photo by Lamont Lenar Valley Lutheran and Nouvel Catholic Central faced off in the opening game of the Class C boys’ district tournament on Monday, March 5, with the Panthers taking the 52-43 win.

The game was a tale of two halves, with the Chargers dominating the first half, outscoring the Panthers 27-11, but Nouvel coming back and dominating the second, 41-16.

Valley Lutheran came out and scored the first nine points of the game. Nouvel then hit the next three buckets to make it 9-6. The Chargers scored two more on free throws to end the period up 11-6.

Valley Lutheran came out and scored the first three baskets of the second quarter. The Panthers then hit a bucket and a free throw to make it 17-9. The Chargers closed out the final three minutes of the period with a 10-2 run to hold the 27-11 advantage at the half.

Photo by Lamont Lenar After scoring only 11 points in the first half, Nouvel came out firing in the second, scoring 18 points in just over five minutes to open the third quarter. Thomas Ready scored 11 in the run with three triples, to get the Panthers within five, 34-29 with under three minutes left in the period.

The Chargers then hit three straight buckets to go ahead 40-29, with Christopher Lemanek hitting a pair of free throws for Nouvel to get within nine, 40-31 to end the quarter.

Nouvel opened the fourth with a pair of triples from Raedy and a basket by Michael Ehlman to get within one point 40-39 with five minutes left in the game.

Valley Lutheran then scored on a free throw and a basket to go back up 43-39. Nouvel scored a field goal, and another triple from Ready gave Nouvel its first lead of the game, 44-43, with under three minutes to go.

The Chargers then had to begin fouling with under a minute to play, but Nouvel made five out of six from the stripe for the 52-43 final.

Valley Lutheran coach Joel Erman said his team had a great first half, defending well, but he knew Nouvel would make a run, and that they took a big punch in the third, but responded.

On the Chargers’ fourth quarter, he said “In all our losses this year we have had one bad quarter, and you can’t have that. We needed something to stop their momentum.”

Nouvel coach Michael Kessler said about his team’s performance in the two halves, “We played jittery in the first half, with 14 turnovers, and had to do a better job of keeping Valley Lutheran out of the paint in the second half.”

Photo by Lamont Lenar Coach Kessler said “We had to get back into our game plan, and stay focused in the second half.”

For Nouvel, Thomas Raedy scored 26 points, 22 of those in the second half. Joshua Kuyligowski and Peter Snyder each scored eight.

For Valley Lutheran, Andrew Gunn had 13 points. Jonathon Giglio had nine and Brady Hagenow had seven points.
