Charger girls fall to Millington in district finals

Photo by Lamont Lenar The Valley Lutheran softball team opened its district tournament with a 15-8 semifinal win over Vassar to advance to the district final against Millington. The Cardinals then took the championship game over the Chargers, 17-2.

In the opening game, Valley Lutheran jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Katie Englehardt led off the game taking first on a hit by pitch, then stole second. Sydney Krenz took first on a bunt, followed by a two-RBI double from Kelsey Vittitow.

Cora Hensler hit a sacrifice grounder to advance Vittitow to third. Tessa Keysor then bunted for a single and drove in a run.

Vassar came back with two runs in the bottom of the first to make it 3-2.

In the second, Eden Belill drew a walk to start the inning. Englehardt then singled, followed by a two-RBI double from Krenz. Vittitow then came up and homered for two more runs and a 6-2 lead.

Vassar scored two runs in its half of the inning, to make it 8-4, and then scored two more in the fourth to pull within two, 8-6.

Valley Lutheran loaded the bases in the sixth inning with two walks and a single from Cora Hensler. Summer Little then drew a walk to score one, followed by Allison Lemanski with a two-run double for the 11-6 lead.

The Chargers finished with three more runs in the seventh. Englehardt led off the inning with a triple, followed by Krenz with a RBI double. Vittitow took first on a wild pitch, with Hensler then driving in two with a single, and Lemanski drove in the Chargers’ final run on a sacrifice fly to make it 15-6.
