Nouvel boys qualify for D-4 state golf finals

The Nouvel Catholic Central boys’ golf team placed second at the Division 4 regional tournament on Thursday, May 31 at Ubly Heights Golf Club. The team shot a 338, one stroke behind first place Breckenridge.

Jack Grant shot an 82 for the Panthers as low team medalist, and finished with the fourth-best round of the tournament. Jonah Wright shot an 83, Sam Buckingham an 86, Tim Stack an 88 and Jeff Mann a 98. The team moves on to the state tournament at Forest Akers East at Michigan State University on Friday and Saturday, June 8-9.

Gatorade Michigan Baseball Player of the Year

Spencer Schwellenbach was selected as the Gatorade Michigan Baseball Player of the Year. As a pitcher, Schwellenbach posted a 4-2 record with a save and a 0.60 ERA through 28 games, striking out 53 batters while allowing just five walks and 14 hits in 35 innings pitched. He also threw a no-hitter.

Schwellenbach batted .376 (26-for-69) with a home run, 16 RBI, 31 runs scored, 20 walks and a .547 on-base percentage entering the postseason. He was a 2017 first-team All-State selection by the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association

Heritage softball bows to Swartz Creek in districts

The Heritage softball team lost its opening round district game 13-0 to Swartz Creek on Saturday, June 2.

Heritage netters place 12th at state finals tourney

The Heritage girls’ tennis team placed 12th out of 22 schools at the state tournament June 1-2. Sabrina Laynesone won her first round match 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-0 at number one singles. Sophia Manlapit won her first match 6-4, 6-0 at number two singles. Anjelica Ferguson won her first match 7-5, 6-1 at number three singles.

In doubles play, Ariana Shokoohi and Emilla Shokkohi won their number two doubles match 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Salina Iqbal and Meghana Mulpuri won their number three doubles match 7-5 6-3. Olivia Baskind and Julie Jacoby won their first match 6-3, 6-3 in the number four bracket.

Vikings take district title

The Swan Valley baseball team won its district tournament on Saturday, June 2 taking down Frankenmuth 4-0 in the district semifinal and then beating Saginaw 31-0 in the final for the title. The Vikings next take on Birch Run at noon in Belding for its opening regional game on Saturday, June 9.

Lady Vikings edge ‘Muth, mercy Bearcats for title

The Swan Valley softball team beat Frankenmuth 1-0 to open its district tournament, then beat Bridgeport 20-0 in the final on Saturday. June 2, The Vikings move on to the Regional tournament June 9 in Belding to play Birch Run at noon.

Heritage golfers finish fifth at Midland regional

The Heritage golf team placed fifth at the Division 1 regional at the Midland Currie Golf Course on Thursday, May 31. The Hawks shot 343 as a team with Matt Moretuzzo posting an 81, Arnav Sharma and Kyler Brown each shooting an 86, and Eathan McKenzie finishing with a 90.

Swan Valley soccer girls top Hemlock, fall to Alma

The Swan Valley girls’ soccer team won its

opening district matchup 4-1 over Hemlock on Tuesday, May 29, but then fell to Alma 7-1 in the semifinal on Wednesday, May 30.

Heritage kickers fall to Midland in district opener

The Heritage girls’ soccer team lost its opening game of the district tournament 4-0 to Midland on Tuesday, May 29.
