Swan Valley knocks off BR, Alma for regional title

Photo by Lamont Lenar The Swan Valley baseball team won its regional championship on Saturday, June 9, taking down Birch Run in the first game of the tournament 10-2, and then beating Alma 3-2 in the final.

The Vikings jumped out on Birch Run in the opener, scoring two runs in the first and two more in the fifth, for the 4-0 lead.

The Panthers came back with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Swan Valley scored four more in the sixth for the 8-1 advantage.

The Vikings then scored two runs in the seventh, with Birch Run putting up one in the bottom of the inning for the 10-2 final.

In the championship game, Swan Valley struck first, scoring in the top of the second inning. Logan Pietz singled, Avery Goldensoph drew a walk, and Pietz scored on an error.

Alma came back and tied the game in the fourth, 1-1.

The Panthers then tied the game 2-2, with a run in the sixth.

Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.

Swan Valley finally took the game in the 10th. Victor Mancini led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Easton Goldensoph and scored the winning run on a single by Hunter Goldensoph for the 3-2 win.

Swan Valley coach Craig Leddy said that the team hit well against Birch Run in the opener and in the final against Alma going to ten innings. “These guys don’t quit,” he said
