Swan Valley softball locks up regional crown

The Swan Valley softball team won its regional championship June 9 with a 10-2 win over Birch Run in the opening game and defeated Portland 3-2 in the final.

Photo by Lamont Lenar The Swan Valley softball team won its regional tournament on Saturday, June 9, first shutting down Birch Run in the opening game 10-0, and then beating Portland 3-2 in the final.

The Vikings did not allow Birch Run a base runner in its first game, while scoring one run in the second inning, then six runs in the third, and finishing off the game with three more in the fourth.

In the championship game Swan Valley took the win in 11 innings.

Portland took the early lead with a two-run homer in the second inning for the 2-0 advantage.

The Vikings got on the board in the fourth ining. Emma Bierlein led off the inning with a single. She took second on a sacrifice grounder by Kaylynn Gulliver and then scored on a double by Aly Fuller, to make it 2-1.

Callie Burgess hit a single, then advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Jordan Delisle and scored on an error, to level the game at 2-2.

Then game then remained tied after seven. The Vikings had base runners in the eighth and ninth innings, and loaded the bases in the 10th, but were unable to score.

In the 11th, the teams bring in a runner on second to start the inning. The Vikings were able to advance their runner on a wild pitch, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Mallory Eurich for the winning run.

Swan Valley coach Tom Kennelly, said they out-hit Birch Run, but left too many base runners stranded. He credited the Vikings’ pitching for the win, saying “Callie (Burgess) pitched a whale of a game.”
