He has been succeeded by former Executive Vice President Veronica Horn, who began as president on Thursday, Aug. 2.

Van Deventer began working in 1974 as a management trainee at Second National Bank of Saginaw. He left banking to pursue a career in marketing, his academic major when he attended Central Michigan University.

He worked for a while at the marketing and communications firm of Scott and Miller Group and then joined Rehmann as its first marketing director.

His volunteer work at the Chamber during his time at Rehmann, along with his passion for marketing and Saginaw, led him to pursue the chamber president position in 2003.

Over the course of 15 years, Van Deventer served on the board of directors for the Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance, Saginaw County Business and Education Partnership, Great Lakes

Bay Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau, and

Saginaw Future, Inc.

He also served on the advisory boards for Saginaw Valley State University College of Business and Management and the Central Michigan University Alumni Board, among others.

A retirement party was held for Van Deventer at Apple Mountain on

Thursday, Aug. 2.

The open house-style event was attended by approximately 200 guests and included a 40-minute farewell program and roast for the departing president.

As part of the program, he was presented with both a state legislative tribute as well as a congressional tribute which has been read into the historical record on the floor of Congress. It was presented by Michigan Senator Ken Horn.

Good natured roasters at the event included new chamber president Veronica Horn, chamber staff Susan Moody, Nancy Stevenson, Lisa Dobbins and Pam Bremer; incoming chamber board President Kraig Schutter, chamber board member Gavin Goetz and former board member Herb Spence.

Also attending were Van Deventer’s wife, Debbie, children, Dana and Kyle, and grandchildren.
