Michigan Works! execs honored as Champions of Workforce Development

GRAND RAPIDS – Two Michigan workforce leaders were honored Monday for their service, dedication to and long-time support of the state’s talent and economic development efforts.

Craig Coney, of GST Michigan Works!, and Ed Oberski, of Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works!, were named the Michigan Works! Association 2018 Champions of Workforce Development, They received their awards at the association’s annual conference in Mt. Pleasant.

“Champions of Workforce Development are honored agency leaders who exemplify the highest standards of leadership and who have made significant contributions to workforce development in Michigan,” said Luann Dunsford, chief executive officer of the Michigan Works! Association. “Craig and Ed are perfect choices as each of them has dedicated his career to helping others better their lives through Michigan Works! programs.”

Oberski held the position of Chief Executive Officer of Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works! from 2004 until his retirement in June.

“Under Ed’s leadership, Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works! evolved into a high impact, employer-focused talent development organization,” Dunsford said. “He spearheaded major regional economic initiatives, including the design of several accelerated training systems to meet critical hiring needs of area employers. The impact of his work will be felt for generations to come.”

Coney retired in December, 2017 after serving Michigan’s workforce system for nearly 20 years, the last five as president of GST Michigan Works!.

“Craig has offered more than just his many exemplary professional gifts to his work—he has offered so much of his heart,” Dunsford said. “He has dedicated his career to building the kinds of learning and apprenticeship opportunities that would help people keep improving and growing for their entire lifetimes— and the people of Michigan owe him a debt of gratitude.”
