Four Vikings sign college letters of intent

Swan Valley had four seniors sign their national letters of intent with colleges to continue their athletic careers.

Two Vikings, Alex Fries and Rorey Garner, signed to play football at Michigan Technological University on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

Fries said that Michigan Tech felt close-knit and personal, and had a solid culture. He plans on studying business administration, pursuing a master’s degree in sports management.

Fries will be going to the Huskies as a quarterback. He said it was a relief to sign and finalize his college plans. He said he is looking forward to a fresh start and competing for a position with the Huskies.

Garner said that he chose Michigan Tech for its top engineering school. He plans on majoring in mechanical engineering.

Garner will be going to the Huskies as a defensive lineman. He said he is excited to go off to college and take care of himself.

With the teammates joining the same team, Garner said, “It will be fun to continue to play together.” Fries said, “It’s like a brother going with me. It will be special for the next four or five years.”

Madelyn Waterman signed with Finlandia University in Hancock on Friday, Feb. 8, to play soccer for the Lions. She said she wanted to play soccer at college and Finlandia has a really good program. She said that Finlandia also had the fields of study she is looking at, nursing and criminal justice.

Waterman said that she is looking forward to going from the high school to the college level, and is excited to meet new people.

Last season she suffered an injury that kept her out of her junior season. She said it was a rocky road, but she continued to get better and focus on college, and was determined not to quit. She said that her family, coaches and teammates helped her to continue to get better.

Kaitlyn Shields signed with Cumberland University in Tennessee on Monday, Feb. 11, joining the archery team. She said she wanted to go to a small faith-based school and wanted to compete in archery. She plans to major in psychology.

Shields began the sport at the age of 4 and started competing at 11. She said it helped, growing up in a hunting family.

Shields was sponsored by Motor City Archery, which helped her compete, and helped in her joining the Cumberland archery team. She placed 15th at the national shoot last summer, out of 41 competitors.
