STCS board of education recognizes standout students and staff

SAGINAW TWP. – The board of education at Saginaw Township Community Schools heard the readings of Westdale Elementary School students who presented their writings to the board during its meeting on Monday, March 11.

Second graders who presented their opinion writing pieces to the board were: Nana Ama Yeboah, William Nichols, Isaiah Zizumbo, Natalie Lefler, Lily Bloedel, Kaylee Thomas and Madalyn Massung.

The board of education also recognized recent nominees of the Saginaw Township Education Association (STEA) Awards. Recipients were Jill Fletcher, counselor at White Pine Middle School, and Barb Huston, third grade teacher at Arrowwood Elementary School.

White Pine Middle School eighth grade teacher Steven Wincent was also recognized during the meeting for being named the Michigan Youth in Government Advisor of the Year.

Michigan Youth in Government Participants were honored as well; Heritage High School students (in grades ninth through 12th) were recognized for participating in the recent Spring Conference and for taking on their various leadership roles.

 

They were: Aden Gohm, Alex Abedrabo, Andrea Rombach, Anjelica Ferguson, Anna Jaffe, Anthony Fiore, Charlie Davis, Chloe Fry, Claire Kubacki, Elizabeth Swope, Emma Abedrabo, Ethan Huebsch, Evan Gohm, Hannah Behe, Hayden Erlenbeck, Isobel Jarema, Jacob Kalkman, James Mlejnek, Jason Hoang, Jeffrey Hoang, Josh Moore, Kaylee Martinez, Megan Sulkanen, Michael Kennelly, Michelle Ross, Reanna Davila, Sam McGrandy, Tyler Berry and Tyler Kalkman.

The board of education awarded student Kamryn Chasnis with the Prudential Spirit of Community Award.

She received a Certificate of Excellence, which signifies that she was among the top 10 percent of all applicants in Michigan in this year’s program. Also, based on the number of volunteer hours indicated in her application, Chasnis also qualified for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

“This award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country,” a statement said that detailed her awards.

“On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, we are proud to be able to present this prestigious award to Prudential Spirit of Community honorees who have met its requirements.”

During the March 11 meeting, a Schools of Choice verbal update was given to the board by Steve Elliott, director of community services, who presented some proposed changes. The board will vote on those updates during the next meeting, set for Monday, March 18.
